What I like about Google Voice is it allows you to create separate phone number that you can fwd to any device.. You can call or text from that device or multiple devices including your pc. cool right?

Google Voice gives you one number for all your phones -- You get a phone number that is tied to you, not to a device or a location. You can use Google Voice to simplify the way you use phones, make using voicemail as easy as email, you will be able to customize your callers' experience, and a lot more.

Google Voice is not a phone service, but it lets you manage all of your phones. Google Voice works with mobile phones, desk phones, work phones, and VoIP lines. There's nothing to download, upload, or install, and you don't have to make or take calls using a computer.

Google Voice will let you forward to which phones you want to ring, based on who's calling, and even let you listen in on voicemail before answering the call. They use smart technology to route your calls. So, if you're already on a Google Voice call, they'll recognize it and use call waiting to reach you on the phone you're on.

Note: At this time Google Voice is only available in the U.S.


What you'll need to set up Google Voice:

You'll need an existing or a new Google Account to get started.

Then, you'll just need a touch-tone phone, and these requirements on your computer:

  • Operating system: Windows XP, Vista, Mac, Linux
  • Web browser: IE6 & above, Firefox 3 & above, Safari 3 & above, Google Chrome
  • Flash 8 and above required: Visit the About Adobe Flash Player page to find your version of Flash or confirm that you've already downloaded it.


Acceptable phone types: When setting up which numbers you want calls to your Google number to be forwarded to, you'll need to select the types of phones you're associating with Google Voice. You can choose one of these three:

  • Mobile. Text messages will only be sent to phones listed as Mobile.
  • Work
  • Home
Google Voice is only supported in the United States and a mobile phone with a U.S. number is required in order to use it. Users outside of the U.S. can use Call Phone in Gmail to make international calls at our affordable rates.
